Cover crops boosts soil health and yield potential
In the case of cover crops an early establishment is crucial to maximize the potential of the crop in terms of contribution to soil health. A fully established cover crop returns more nutrients to the soil from nitrogen fixation, adds more organic matter, improves soil structure and stimulates greater microbial activity; these benefits are all carried forward into the next growing season and the following crops.
When breaking a fully grown cover crop, a full cut out at ultra-shallow tillage depth provides high capacity and great agronomic benefits. Working intensively at a depth of 0-3 cm crushes and mulches the cover crop without mixing the plant residues into an oxygen-free environment further down the soil profile. After the first pass, the stems of the cover crops are crushed and microorganisms get access to the biomass to do their work.
This breaks down the cover crop completely and gives the full potential to benefit the soil structure as well as minimize some risks in the following main crop.
Increase yield potential by maintaining good field hygiene
Field hygiene is centred around the management of waste seeds after harvesting maize, canola or cereals where the aim is to get the whole seed bank to germinate and the plant residues to start decomposing as soon as possible. A reduced seed bank improves the competitive advantage of the next crop and can reduce the cost of herbicides.
Many waste seeds and weeds are triggered to germinate by sunlight. If buried too deeply, they can remain in a dormant state for many years and then germinate and grow during tillage, requiring weed treatments. By giving the waste seeds and weeds good soil contact with good access to sunlight, an ultra-shallow tillage provides a certainty that they will all germinate in the false seedbed, when you want them to germinate, not years later. The emerged false seedbed can then be broken with a second tillage and give the next crop a clean top layer of soil.
Improve conditions for soil life The biological soil life such as earth worms, soil microbes are crucial in building soil health. Soil life helps out with everything from nutrient efficiency, building soil structure, keeping moisture, infiltration, protection against insects, diseases and stress. Ultra-shallow tillage in the dry topsoil layer leads to minimal losses of earthworms and the breaking of capillarity done with ultra-shallow tillage retains moisture in the lower soil layers making earthworms and other soil life more active. Leaving plant residues in the upper soil layers also favours earthworm activity, as it increases the rate of decomposition and at the same time gives the earthworms access to the plant residues on the surface, which in turn increases the organic content of the soil and provides the subsequent crop with a better environment and vegetation.

Starter phosphorus secures the harvest during dry and cold springs
Phosphorus in a plant-available form is crucial for crop development, especially during the early growth stages up to growth stage 30. The availability of phosphorus during this period affects both tillering and root development. Well-developed roots are vital for the plant's ability to withstand prolonged dry periods. These factors directly influence the yield level and indirectly affect the harvest timing, as phosphorus deficiency delays maturation.
Phosphorus availability is highly dependent on temperature. The relative availability of phosphorus at 12–14°C in the soil is only about one-third of what it is when the soil temperature rises above 20°C. This means phosphorus availability is reduced under cold and dry soil conditions when mineralization is weak. This is often the case with early spring drilling in cold soils.
Furthermore, phosphorus is not very mobile in the soil, meaning the plant's access to phosphorus is entirely dependent on its own root development. The roots must reach the phosphorus. However, under cold and dry conditions, root development is weak, and this difference is particularly noticeable in fields with naturally low phosphorus content.
There are, however, solutions to the phosphorus problem. It is advantageous to "precision-fertilize" phosphorus next to the seed using a BioDrill equipped with phosphorus kit. These tubes allow you to place the mineral fertilizer right next to the seed, ensuring that phosphorus is available at an early stage. It is during this early phase that phosphorus is most crucial for plant development and for securing a good quality harvest.
Another option with the BioDrill and phosphorus kit is to place all the phosphorus via the BioDrill and use an NKS product through the fertilizer hopper on the Rapid. This allows for even more precise application maps for mineral fertilizers without needing to switch between different fertilizers to achieve the correct phosphorus dosage in the right part of the field. The ISOBUS terminal can be used to control two products, phosphorus and nitrogen. This approach provides highly accurate fertilizer application, ensuring the right amount of the right product in the right place, even within the same field. Increased precision benefits both the environment and your wallet.
Oil seed rape seed drilling with phosphorus kit
Phosphorus kits, originally developed to direct a small amount of fertilizer from the seed hopper down through a connection at the metering unit to the coulter, have proven to be very user-friendly for drilling oil seed rape. They offer several advantages: it is easier to monitor and balance the small seed quantity in the small box, which is then at a good height and easy to manage. You can also take advantage of the option to apply two separate fertilizers, one side-banded in the fertilizer hopper and one in the seed hopper, which is then incorporated with the seed.
Consider the possibility of closing coulters to drill oil seed rape with wider row spacing, which might be of interest for a more open crop stand. This is easy to do on the BioDrill – simply close the slide on the coulters you wish.
Spirit gives conditions for perfect emergence
Spirit gives conditions for great precision in the field. The hydraulic system with active coulter pressure keeps constant pressure even on uneven ground for perfect emergence. It gives optimal seed distribution with its wide soft press wheel, keeping great depth and seed slot closing. The availability of moisture available for the seed determines the results of germination and nutrient efficiency to the seed development. Spirit can be part of a more water-efficient strategy. Dry conditions during drilling poses risks to plant development, why placing fertilizers gives the seed better conditions for an perfect emergence.
Effective fertilization is achieved by applying nutrients to the soil in such a way that it is present where there is moisture for root development and nutrient uptake. The lower the soil level of nutrients are, or the more retention we have by high or low pH values, the more important this becomes. This is particularly important for phosphorus that moves very slow in the soil.
Optimal small seed establishment
For those who have a BioDrill on their seed drill, there are many different options for establishing small seeds. In the image below, we describe the various methods we have offered to date. All options can be ordered through spare parts, either as individual components or as kits.
Some farmers have requested seed placement between the rear harrow and the press wheel of the coulter to achieve a more reliable establishment. This has led us to develop a new method. It can be altered with existing parts on the seed drill, along with some additional components.
A. Seeding of grain and oil seed rape (standard coulter) B. InLine incorporation of micro granulates or small seeds (max 50kg N/ha is recommended) C. Small seed establishment D. Distribution of slug pellets

Long or short slots and different widths?
Short slots increase the accuracy of seed placement, which is important in dry conditions during spring drilling. In very wet and tough conditions, short slots can be a bit more sensitive and may block more frequently.
16mm slot width works for most crops. When drilling large seeds such as beans the wider 19mm slot is a safer choice since it reduces the risk of blockages.

Coulter and disc one unit
The coulter should touch the disc in the lower part. The top should have a space of 0.5–2.5mm to the disc.
Note! The coulter must never reach below the disc level.
Always a perfect fit
By using genuine Väderstad hubs you are always guaranteed the same high quality and perfect fit as factory fitted.
- Optimal tightness
- Protects the bearings from moisture and dust
- Strength for tough conditions
- Developed by Väderstad
The disc and hub must be viewed as one unit. If the tolerances of each stretches too far, moisture and soil particles risk entering the bearing or tensions between bolts and disc can cause discs to crack between the holes.
